Deborah Scaling Kiley: Albatross

Experiment:

Deborah Scaling Kiley and a crew that totalled 6 set out in October, 1982, on the Trashman, a 58-foot yacht, from Maine to Florida. Captain John, Meg and Deborah sailed from Maine to Annapolis. From there, they added two additional crew members: Mark and Brad.

Continuing their voyage without charts, the crew encountered high seas and gale winds off the coast of NC during the second day of their journey. A sudden and unexpected wave struck the Trashman through its cabin windows, and within minutes, the vessel sank. The crew was left adrift  without food or water in a tiny rubber dingy, each person desparately trying to survive.

Meg was the first to pass after acquiring blood poisoning following a severe injury from a fall.

Mark and John went overboard on the second day, driven by madness.

Deborah and Brad held to their faith that a rescue was going to happen. Four days following the accident, a Russian freighter happened upon Deborah and Brad.  The boat picked them up and returned them to shore in North Carolina at Morehead City.

Deborah Scaling Kiley caputred this incredible experience in her book Albatross.
